Is diarrhea one of the side effects of urinary tract health food for cats?

Our cat had a urinary blockage a few months back and at our vet's suggestion we purchased Purina One's Urinary Tract Health Formula. This took care of his strained (sometimes non-existent) urination, but he has now developed fairly frequent diarrhea. He doesn't exhibit any other signs of distress/illness, so I'm fairly convinced that this isn't the sign of something more serious. I'm wondering how serious the diarrhea itself is and if there's anything simple we can do to treat it. I have considered switching the food, which I'll try after this batch runs out. Thanks in advance!

I don't know that it's a given that that food will cause it. However, I did feed that to both my cats for the first 2 years of their lives. I mixed it with Purina's Weight Management about 1/2 and 1/2.

Poppy ALWAYS had loose stool. Not diarrhea, but always loosey goosey. Sophie has always been fine.

When I switched them to Natural Balance canned, Sophie stayed the same but Poppy improved IMMENSELY. No more weekly butt washing for me! We were both happy about that.

I recently had to give in and give her some dry food again (she went on strike). Since I wasn't about to completely lower my standards, I mixed it in with Evo. I had to buy Purina, and I chose the UTI one since that was partly what I fed before. She's been getting about 1/4 cup per day of the two mixed together, and almost immediately her stool softened again.

So I guess my point is - it's not a hard and fast rule, but it quite likely disagrees with your cat, just as it did with mine.

I'm now decreasing the amount of dry food they get, and I'll be cutting back on the Purina portion as well.

What I recommend to you is to first take a stool sample to the vet for analysis to rule out anything else. If nothing is found, I really recommend doing some research and changing your cat's diet.

It's well documented that cats who eat moist (canned or raw) diets are less likely to suffer from urinary tract issues. This is because they are taking in adequate water in their food. Cats have low thirst drives and most do not drink enough water. Just like humans, water intake is important to urinary health. So if your cat is getting enough moisture in his food, his urine will be less concentrated (and less smelly!) and UTI's will be less frequent.

you don't have that recalled food do you?

i hope not!!!!

I would check with your vet...If your going to try and change food, dont do it all at once...Add the new food with the one your baby is eating now...Then slowly decrease old food...

Can you buy acai berry products in your local health food store?

I want to do the acai berry diet and I don't know If I could buy it at my local health food store or if I should get one of those free trials online? Thanks for your time!

Acai berries are a newly discovered berry that has some amazing characteristics. The acai berry is high in anti-oxidants and really helps people loose weight quickly. There are lots of health advantages to acai berries, but they must be frozen right after harvest to make sure they retain thier maximum potency. One of the most populat brands of acai suppliments is acai berry power 500. Many talk show hosts have done profiles on the health benefits of acai. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Acai-Berry.html

Acai berry products are available in most health food or vitamin stores. I have no financial ties to Sambazon, but they are one of the most well-known and reputable companies selling acai. Unlike other companies, I think it is safe to order from their website.

The acai berry craze is filled with SCAMS, especially on the internet. I would be very cautious about ordering free trials of acai. Do a search for "Acai Berry Scams" on google. Also, many of the people on YA are distributors for various acai companies, and I would discourage you from buying from these companies.

Regarding scams, I am speaking from personal experience. I ordered a free trial of Acai Berry Power 500. On my next credit card, I noticed an extra charge of $29.95 from that acai company. I called them and they said I had agreed to a personal nutrition consultation for $29.95. To make a long story short, I had to threaten them with a lawsuit before they refunded that extra charge. Then they started to send me shipments of acai I had never ordered.

I also ordered Acai Berry Supreme. A few weeks later, I got another bottle in the mail, even though I never asked for it. I left the shipping box unopened and wrote on it: Return to Sender. Do Not Charge My Credit Card for This Product. Then I put the item back in a mailbox. I am worried about what my next credit card will say. I've heard of people being charged $89 for the next shipment.

You can buy acai products at your health food store, if its a good health food store! :) I've seen the juice in stores for $50 for a tiny bottle.

I decided to go for the online path and I'm glad I did. I use Acai Berry Ultimate which you can try for free here:

http://sarasweightloss.org/AcaiBerryUltimateFREEtrial

I could not be happier with the results. You can read about my story below.

Many companies offer free trials of Acai so you can 'try before you buy'. That's probably your best bet. This site

http://newherbalremedies.com/acai.html

lists free trial offers.

Forget it. It's a rip off. It's just another weight loss scam to make somebody rich.

Is It better to purchase a colon cleanse on line or at a Health food food store?

For example Dr. Floras Colon cleanse. The product is very costly more so than what you can purchase at a health food store.

do u really need to "cleanse" ur colon? i would advice u to eat 2 apples every day or any other fruit which would clean ur digestive system adequeately. just stick to natural fiber sources.

unless u have a medical problem which requires this procedure u need the bacteria in ur colon to absorb nutrients n to prevent infections.

dont waste ur money on these things. they do more harm than good.

If it's the same brand, then where you buy it doesn't matter. There are natural cleanses you can do at home--green vegetables work better than anything else to clean your colon naturally.

HSS is right. There's no reason at all to cleanse your colon. There's absolutely no truth to the idea that certain foods stay in your body for a long time unless you do a cleanse.

Fiber is always a good idea. It will make you feel better if you're having a problem. Personally, I like adding wheat germ to my breakfast shakes.

What's the best herbal supplement I can get at a health food store or GNC that will increase male libido?

Just need something to increase libido and/or testosterone. Nothing for ED or impotence. Just want to increase the interest/drive. I want something I can get at a local health food store that's a natural herb and is safe to take.

Try Holland & Barrett they are a reputable company

I recommend coconut oil. It works best when rubbed into your breasts and other intimate areas, and he does the rubbing. Chocolate sauce can work pretty well too.

Is raw meat from an average health food store irradiated?

Hi, I would like to know if raw, organic meat from a health food store is irradiated as I recently have learned that it sometimes is. Can you give me a reliable source? Thanks.

Certified organic meat should never be irradiated as that would be against the USDA regulations that expressly ban irradiation of organic meats (and all other organic foods). Not certified organic meat not bought direct from the farmer likely is irradiated

To be really safe buy your meats direct from the farmer

What is a really good allergy/cold medicine found in a health food store?

My boyfriend has been suffering from serious nasal congestion and a dry cough for about a month. He has seen several doctors and nothing they have given him has helped. We're hoping something from a health food store might work.

You don't need a health food store. Buy local honey... Honey that is made from within 25 miles from your home... Use it every day in tea or coffee and the allergeies will subside within a couple weeks.

Try E. Excel products:

benadryl works great for allergies i dont know about the cough.

There are two GREAT products on the market that will knock that right out of him. Tylenol cold n flu (Hot microwave version)and Comtrex

I'm not sure about here (Scotsman in USA) but HF shops in uk have great staff who will be able to tell you the best things.

try dextromethorphan 15mg - use 10mls every 4 hours

lots of vitamin C, benadryl, and if he's got stuff in his chest, a decongestant cough syrup.

Can I get health food at a regular grocery store for less than at a health food store? where?

I am a total health nut, but being a health nut, means that I want the best quality I can get that doesn't have all those dyes, high fructose corn syrup, growth hormones, etc... But the problem is, is that health food stores can go way out of bugget for me. Where are some cheaper places for me to get good, healthy food for less?

I've seen some of the Red Mill products at Kroger's.

Here in the mid-Louisiana area, (Lafayette, La) we have Vitamin Plus and some other scattered locations. Nice prices. I believe one of the reasons they have reasonable prices is because (1) they don't accept credit cards and pass that savings (no credit card trasaction fees) onto the customers (2) they don't have a scanning system at the register.

Note - NOT all foods at the health food store is healthy for you either.

Trader Joe's, if you have them in your area, typically carries organic produce for less than the ubiquitous Whole Foods. I live in New York City, though, and I have to say that TJ's produce section is pathetic compared to Whole Foods'.

Also consider local farmers' markets (or better yet, farmers directly), or food co-ops (once again, usually in urban areas).

Finally, you could subscribe to a CSA (community-support agriculture) which typically provides ample produce at a reasonable price - although you do have to pay a larger sum up front. Find a local CSA here: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/

What is the best all natural immune system booster from a health food store?

I was just really sick and had to be on antibiotics, so once I'm off them and better I'd like to go to the health food store and get things to kind of fix myself up, since taking any kind of "meds" makes me uncomfortable. Are Probiotics or any kind of protein drinks, etc any good? Thanks!

Some of the most popular natural products for boosting the immune system are Colostrum, Mushrooms (Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi), IP-6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), Beta Glucans, Elderberry, Echinacea (should be taken short-term only), and any antioxidants.

As far as Probiotics, that's the beneficial bacteria that lives in your intestinal tract. If you are taking antibiotics for a short time, you should get some good Probiotics to take after the antibiotics are completely finished. If you take them together, the antibiotics will kill the Probiotics before they can be beneficial and it might lessen the potency or effect of the antibiotics... but you'll need the Probiotics to replenish your intestinal flora after the antibiotics have killed them all off.

Protein powders are just protein (like a hamburger)... they don't directly impact your immune system at all.

Good luck!

I partly agree with SkepDoc but There is Only one CLINICALLY Proven Immune System Booster. The Body can ONLY make Glutathione which in turn produce and reproduce more white cells to protect all other cells. Immunocal will raise your Glutathione. watch video & ask at http://cureyourself.ning.com http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080429065500AAhJl6w&kid=NYBMBUfHOVLChEq18jBz&s=comm&date=2008-10-06+08%3A17%3A55&.crumb=

"Immune boosting" is a bogus concept common to many different kinds of altmed, but in particular the Naturopathic crowd, who seem to embrace every kind of silly treatment

There really is no such thing in terms of supplements. Your body's immune system consists of various kinds of white blood cells, immune globulins and something known as complement whose roles in fighting disease and infection have been worked out in some detail. You can read up on clinical immunology on your own, but it is quite complicated.

Your immune system does become a bit stressed when you are critically ill, but recovers quickly with time, rest and proper nutrition.

Probiotics on the other hand supposedly replace your bodies stock of intestinal bacteria that may become depleted when being treated with anti-bacterial agents. The most common example of this is women who tend to get vaginal yeast infections after a course of antibiotics. There is alos an opportunistic gut infection called Clostridium difficile that can cause a nasty diarrhea typically in frail elderly patients on antibiotics in a hospital setting.

There actually is some fair evidence that probiotics, yougurt culture, acidophillus etc may help return you body's normal flora, but the vast majority of otherwise healthy people who take antibiotics don't need them...your body recovers pretty quickly on its own. The best way to avoid problems like this is not taking antibiotics for inappropriate reasons, like viral infections (most colds, coughs, sore throats, ear aches etc) and I spend half my time explaining to patients that they DON"T need them

There was also a recent study on the use of probiotics in the setting of people recovering from pancreatitis that their use INCREASED infection, complication rate and death. So they are not a completely "benign' entity either.

I like using probiotics after being on anitbiotics, and there are many out there to choose from. They can be kind of pricey, though. Yogurt is a good way to "reseed" your gut after anti-b use. Look for brands with "active cultures" right on the label, because if it's not there, there aren't any beneficial bacteria in there! Dannon has a line of yogurt and drinks that purport to have more active cultures in them. They would be a good route to start on if you don't want to invest the $20 (or more) in a bottle of probiotic capsules.

I also take elderberry concentrate for immune system boosting. Here's a link about elderberry: http://www.elderberry.net/medical.html

Hope you feel better soon!

Probiotics are excellent for keeping the body populated with good bacteria. Protein drinks offer nothing in terms of immune system enhancement. Other good choices are Oil of Oregano, Olive Leaf, Vitamin C, Green Tea, and a good multivitamin. A healthy diet and exercise are important also, as is drinking plenty of water, avoiding sugar, alcohol, and nicotine.

Astragalus is a good general immune system booster too.

And probiotics are an excellent idea, especially after antibiotics. Check this link for good brands:

http://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/Probiotic_Supplements_Including_Lactobacillus_acidophilus_Bifidobacterium_and_Others/probiotics/

To the best of my understand:

Vitmen C is good

Echinecia is a little better

Echinecia and Goldseal is better still

and Oil of Oregano is the best possible. A good health food store might well have a suplement with all of the above ingredients listed.

Echinacea and a good probiotic are excellent for boosting the immune system, especially after a course of antibiotics.

What are various Health Food stores in Florida?

Aside from Whole Foods, i am looking for Health Food stores in the state of Florida ... Can you please help me out by naming some of the ones you know? If possible, please provide the address and phone numbers as well. Thank you.

Chamberlains is the best known. Also Publix has a lot of good foods. They have Arnold's high fiber bread. Kashi products. Greenwise items which is a whole area of the store dedicated to that.
